Come Say Goodbye to Us At Our Final Charleston Farmers Market on Saturday July 30th & Take Home Some Giddy Goat Relics!

We will be doing our final market this Saturday @ Marion Square from 8-2 PM and we’d love you to come say goodbye to us and take home some great Giddy Goat relics to remember us by! We’ll be giving away the famous “Giddy Up!” T-shirts free with a purchase of $27.00 or more: easily hit with a Growler of Giddy Up! Whey Soda (you keep the growler) and an 8oz cheese. Only while supplies last (we have two boxes of t-shirts). We also have a bunch of “Meet the Giddy Goat Cards”, stickers and smiles. All free of charge. If you are a regular customer we will have a photographer snapping shots of all of you who have helped make this such a special experience over the last 4 years. We look forward to seeing you Saturday! GIDDY UP!
We are sad to announce that Giddy Goat will cease operations as of July 30, 2011. Since we started Organic Process in 2005 we have followed our instincts and drives — trying to create things people will value. But a major part of insuring the Organic Process continues is to look soberly at the reality of our situation and determine the most practical and inspired path forward. Sometimes things work; but they don’t work as a business. Giddy Goat is an example of that.
Over the past 4 years we have had incredible support and love from the Charleston community. We made great products, stayed creative and fun in how we approached the business and have built some fantastic relationships. But with the growth of a local food operation comes more work, more stress, and the need for larger and larger investments. What we have learned is that making and selling local artisan cheese is too big to be a hobby and too small to be a business. The list of challenges faced by small food producers is too long to detail here — but they are some of the bravest and hardest working people on the planet. Feeling like a colleague to such people has been an honor.
Organic Process will find it’s voice in a post-Giddy world, but right now we are sad at the disappointment we are bringing to the relationships we have formed with employees, farmers and customers. We are convinced that Giddy Goat did make the world a better place and that it will be a bit sadder (for awhile) for being gone.
We will be at the Charleston Farmers Market through July 30th and will be fulfilling orders to restaurants and stores through the 22nd of July. Please come see us and say goodbye.

About SILO:
SILO is the Sea Islands Local Outlet. Our mission is to provide locally sourced food to Beaufortonians and educate them about where and how the food they eat is produced. Just as a silo in agriculture is used to store large amounts of feed or grain until it is ready to be distributed, Beaufort’s SILO is a place where a large variety of local food will be brought, stored and distributed to local residents. In essence, it is a local grocer with two shopping methods: the online farmers market and the shopfront. SILO will operate a physical market out of a retail shopfront in the Habersham Marketplace. For online orders, customers will pick up their order at the shopfront on Market Day. On other days when the shop is open, customers can come in and pick up many of their groceries from local sources. These are not gourmet/tourist-oriented products. The goal is to market to local Beaufortonians who enjoy eating locally-sourced foods. Meat, eggs, milk, cheese, breads, desserts are examples of products that are offered.

words: Jessica Dennis Farrah Hoffmire isn’t your typical Southern belle who’s afraid to get her hands dirty. She’s an artist, a film producer, and now a goat-cheese maker. Her local, handmade, Giddy Goat Cheese has already caught the eye of the finest chefs and stores in the region. Having grown up on a small farm in Summerville, SC, Hoffmire is well acquainted with the agrarian lifestyle and has always kept it close to her heart. In 2005, she and her husband Mitchell began their own philanthropic media company called Organic Process Productions which focuses on art and media projects, particularly things that highlight local food and cultural heritage in South Carolina. Though OPP is still going strong, Hoffmire wanted to do more hands on work. She yearned for a farm of her own and began thinking about what she could produce herself. In 2009, she reached out to strong pastoral figures, Sidi and Louise Limehouse (owners of local organic Rosebank Farms) and helped them launch their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Amid this process, her new friends taught her how to make fresh goat cheese from goat’s milk and provided her with kitchen space to do it. True to her roots, she quickly took to the process and began making and selling it herself. “Basically people started asking for it, I kept making and improving it, and people kept buying it. We were thrilled”, she says. And buy it they did. Giddy Goat Cheese has been sought after and sold to many of Charleston’s best restaurants, grocery stores, and markets. Giddy Goat Cheese comes in four flavors: Pure (salt-free), Cracked Pepper and Sea Salt, Pimiento, and Crystallized Ginger. When asked how she manages all of her interests so efficiently, Hoffmire humbly jokes about how much time there is in a day when your whole life is your work. She manages Giddy Goat Cheese during the day, then paints or edits video at night. “Giddy Goat is a great start, but only the beginning,” she says. She has also recently launched a healthy handcrafted whey soda using the nutrient rich by-product whey from the cheese making process. We can only imagine what’s she’s got in store for us next!
